Saving Lives with Rhythm from California

Meet the Colombian woman who has been changing lives with her Zumba-therapy, inspired by her love for dancing
Sandra Cano ready to teach her Zumba classes!
After working as a choreographer for 15 years and a Zumba instructor for 7 of those, Sandra Cano ventured on teaching free bilingual Zumba classes online in response to the novel coronavirus quarantine. Sandra believes that dancing is a type of therapy and it should be available and accessible to everyone.

Sandra was born and raised in Armenia, Quindío, a region in eastern Colombia along the Cordillera Central (a branch of Colombia’s Andes mountain range). In that area, one can find some of the best coffee in the world. Sandra is a proud Colombian wife and mother of two daughters, and is passionate about dancing.

When the pandemic started and different businesses started closing, she told her husband she was planning to continue dancing. “Dancing and exercising have become a way of living for me. Besides helping me get my normal weight back, Zumba rescued me from depression and anxiety, it became my medicine," said Sandra. Just like her, there are many people who fight against these invisible enemies. During these unprecedented times where all of us have to stay home, there are people who have also lost their jobs, and mental health has become even more important than it was before.

“I think that Zumba is therapy. I am doing my best so that those who want to Zumba can access it. My main goal is to bring joy, positivity, exercise, and hope to those who want and need it,” said Sandra. This is something that is already working and showing results.

Only one month into teaching her online Zumba classes, participants were invited to fill out a survey about their experience to contribute to this article. “Sandra's classes are very well organized. I like her joy and the fact that I can see how much she loves dancing. I feel like I am at the party of the year even though I’m just at home,” shared Diana from Pennsylvania.

María from Colombia also shared “This class has changed my life. I was suffering from depression due to the crisis and this class saved me out of the depression. I have stopped crying out of sadness. I now get tears of joy thanks to Sandra and her classes.”

Before coronavirus, Sandra was already teaching Zumba in California’s Bay Area where she resides. For Sandra, having switched from in-classroom to online teaching has been like day and night, with many challenges and lessons. She mentions that with in-classroom classes, instructors get to know their students and are able to start a friendship. You also do not need a lot of technology, just a device to play music so that people can dance to it. “Teaching in a room full of people who are happily smiling, shouting and singing, is definitely not the same as dancing, in my living room, with no students. That was very difficult for me. I did not feel motivated, my energy was not the same, and on top of everything, I felt so embarrassed dancing by myself. I felt like I was a brand-new Zumba instructor!” says Sandra.
Participants of Sandra Cano's class thank her for her amazing online class.
As of today, around 50 households have benefited from her online classes. Barbara from California shared “This is a very anxious time for me. My daughter is an ICU nurse with an 8-month-old. Being able to do Zumba with Sandra has helped me calm down and get things accomplished. Is it the endorphins or her enthusiasm? I’m not sure, but I am so grateful!” Everyone is welcome at Sandra Cano's classes, all ages, genders and races.“My mom is 69 and the class is keeping her active, her temper changed as soon as she started taking this class,” stated Lily from Texas. Participants from diverse backgrounds, who for the most part have not met Sandra in person yet, join her class from Virginia, Washington, California, Colorado, Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania, as well as Colombia and Mexico.

Sandra Cano ready to start her online class!
Sandra started teaching her online bilingual classes last March, and although from the beginning she decided not to charge as a way to contribute to the community, she still continues to buy class materials and pay for her Zumba membership, internet access and Zoom account to continue her work. “We, instructors, are who we are because of those who take our classes. People who participate in my classes are my biggest motivation, they can't imagine the difference they make in the life of an instructor.”
